This book is probably the most hyped book of 2018. And by the end, I could see why.

Jules Ember is just a girl from a town called Crofton living with her father and struggling to pay the rent... Their debt being in blood-coins, the currency in Sempera. By extracting blood from someone, called timeletting, it can be transformed into hour-, day-, week-, month-, or year-coins. The catch: however much blood they take withdraws the same amount of years the individual has in the rest of their life. Take enough blood to create a week-coin, and a week is taken from their remaining lifespan.

And Jules' dad has given a little too much to pay the rent. Suddenly, Jules must go back to the place of her childhood, and her nightmares, in order to save her father. And nothing is as it seems. Literally nothing. Like, don't try to theorize or make predictions or anything unless you're sure you're prepared.

Because the first thing I want to note first is how absolutely unique and shocking this story is! The entire time I was reading, I was trying to figure things out, connect the dots. Not to brag or anything, but I've read so many books that I've gotten pretty good at that. Yet every single one of my "theories" was at least half-wrong. I was completely and utterly shocked. I really couldn't breathe at times, couldn't wrap my head around what was happening.

The only weakness I found was my confusion with the mythology. There are two deities in Sempera: the Alchemist and the Sorceress. Holland explains the mythology and what allegedly went down between the two, but it is very hard to follow and understand, at least for me, and that hindered my understanding of events later in the novel.

In other words, this is a roller coaster... the kind I do like ;) . Though I was super stressed out (haha) and a little confused at times, this book is a definite yes. It's simple yet complex. I definitely enjoyed reading this book.

Warning! There is spoilers in the next section so PLEASE don't read it if you haven't read the book! It will mess up all the plot twists for you!

Some hopes I have for the next book:
~we get to see outside Sempera. I know the Queen blocked any traffic going out of Sempera, but I want some adventure! I wouldn't mind more sight-seeing in Sempera, though, either ;) .
~we get some fugitive action. I eat up the whole fugitive idea in books and I'm totally getting the vibes.
~I am totally shipping Liam OMG tbh I knew he was a good guy the whole time and I am SO excited! I don't like that Roan is dead, but I really didn't like how Jules idolized him... and I ship her with Liam so hard right now, so I'm really looking forward to some cute action ;) ok cool, I'm done rambling

Thanks for reading, fellow bookworms, and au revoir!
